The fleur-de-lys motive in the flanks of the frog is thought to have originated with the Hill firm in the early 20th century and is particularly associated with the work of William C. Retford and Albert Leeson - two of Hill's foremost bow makers during that period. Today many bow makers use the motive and it is also found on good trade bows. This bow is a copy of such a model normally associated with W. E. Hill & Sons.
(Incidently - in fleur-de-lys the 's' in the word lys is pronounced! This is one of the exceptions in the French rule of not pronouncing the final s in words.)
The workmanship on this bow is very good. The stick is of good pernambuco cut round, with a distinct vertical flame accross the stick. The lapping is of silver wire and the thumbpad of leather with an imitation lizard skin finish. The tip is of bone. The mother-of-pearl inlays in the adjuster button give this bow a beautiful and appealing finish.
This is a good and nicely crafted bow with very good playing properties at an affordable price. This bow would suit advanced players who would appreciate a good-looking silver-mounted pernambuco bow that performs well.
