It appears that most of the good trade copies of violins by Maggini emerged in Germany during the 1920s through 1950s. Why German commercial violinmaking workshops had such predilection for copying Maggini instruments is not clear, but they almost always were very nicely made and well-toned. Obviously many other Maggini copies were made in various places in the years that followed until now, but it appears that this bloom of Maggini copies was highly fashionable in Germany over the period mentioned.

This violin follows the Maggini pattern - double purfling, a very long back length (36.9 cm in this case) and the additional curl in the scroll - a trademark of Maggini's idiosyncrasy. But then it deviates in that the Fs are certainly in the style of Guarneri. Workmanship is very tidy, notably in the scroll, the purfling and the cornerwork.

In this violin, probably made around 1930, one is struck by the beautiful piece of bird's eye maple used for the one-piece back, ribs and the neck and scroll. The top is of good tonespruce. Varnish is an appealing reddish brown over a yellow ground, making this an attractive instrument.

It is a well-toned violin in good condition.
