Although bearing the label of the English firm, Excelsior, this violin appears to be the product of Schuster & Co. of Markneukirchen, probably made around 1920. This is based on the interrupted fluting on the back of the scroll - a characteristic identifier of many of this firm's commercial violins. This instrument was no doubt imported to England, and the label acknowledges its German origin.

The materials selected for this violin are attractive and of good quality. The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of medium to broadly flamed maple with a distinct lively curl. The top is of medium-grain tonespruce with a straight and even winter growth. The varnish is beautiful golden amber of high transparency, complimenting the wood nicely.

This violin's tone impresses. It is strong with carrying power and focus, well-balanced and speaks very easily. It is a rewarding instrument to play, giving a lot without asking questions.
