This violin is genuinely old and has all the characteristics of an instrument dating from the early to mid-18th century. The label conforms to that of Michael Platner. The handwritten date is virtually illegible, but seems to be 1749. Workmanship in this violin is of a very high order, evidenced particularly in attention to detail, the impeccably traced purfling and superb mitres and cornerwork. The scroll is elegant and nicely balanced.

The one-piece back of somewhat plain unfigured wood is cut on the slab. The ribs appear to be of the same wood. The top is of finely grained tonespruce of excellent quality. Although this violin has seen some repairs to the scroll, the neck button and two cracks on the top - all superbly done - it can be said to be structurally in excellent condition.

This violin is very well-toned by all standards, truly setting it in a league above most. The tone is strong, rich and mature with focus and excellent clarity. The response is easy and it's a pleasure to play on. It is eminently suitable for performance of a high order.

Condition :

Considering its age, this violin is in a remarkably good condition for an instrument some 270 years old. Repairs to the scroll and to two cracks in the top were superbly done, evidently the work of a master craftsman. A crack in the back's upper treble quadrant and to the button area could have been better done and it appears that this crack is not cleated but merely glued. This instrument does not have a soundpost crack in the front or back and can be considered as being structurally very secure. This violin has been over-varnished, but it appears to have retained its original varnish underneath.
