In this cello one is struck by two things - firstly, the very appealing and well-flamed choice of wood for the back, sides and scroll. And secondly, it is a very well-toned instrument, in excellent condition. At a guess it was made around 1890. Inside are the remains of a label and two JTL logos branded into the wood (see photos).

The firm of Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy was founded in 1857 and closed down more than 100 years later, in 1968. During its zenith - from around 1880 to 1930 - it established its reputation as being one of the most reputable producers of truly excellent instruments that consistently conform to the high demands of French lutherie. JTL instruments were and are to this day greatly respected for quality and tone. This instrument is no exception. The choice of material throughout shows discernment and strong visual appeal, notably in the two piece back and ribs. This cello is very well-toned and certainly suitable for demanding musical performance.
