The important Dutch violin maker, J. J. Van de Geest (1899-1974) settled in Johannesburg in 1938 after working in London for George Hart & Son for 18 years as master of the studio. Apart from his personal work as maker he imported many instruments of various grades from different suppliers, mostly German and Dutch - these instruments were all labelled 'Made for J. J. Van de Geest'. This viola bears this label and is dated 1973, probably of German origin.
The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll is of mildly flamed maple. The front is of good tone spruce and all workmanship is refined and accurate. Interestingly the bridge was made by Timothy Crake, a London - graduated violin maker who lived in Johannesburg for a number of years before moving to New Zealand where he passed away.
This viola is well toned and suitable for an advanced to entry-level professional player.
