This is an outstanding instrument in every respect, superbly toned and highly responsive. It speaks with ease, clarity, focus and projection and is eminently suited for high-level solo performance.
It is based on the 1701 'Servais' cello by Antonio Stradivari. Workmanship throughout is impeccable, displaying exceptional attention to detail and underscoring the long and well-established tradition of high-level instrument building in Hungary. One cannot fail to notice the flawless attention to detail in the tracing of the purfling, in the outstanding cornerwork and mitres, and in the scroll, which is balanced and elegant.
The two-piece back and ribs are particularly attractive - of superbly flamed maple with a narrow straight curl, giving great appeal to this instrument. The neck and scroll are more mildly flamed.
The top, however, is of exceptionally attractive tone spruce with straight, very broad grain, consistent from flank to flank. This broad grain top no doubt adds to the rich overtone response and projection of this cello. The oil-based varnish is a beautiful blend of reddish-brown truly complimenting the instrument as a whole and adding to its visual appeal. This is really a beautiful cello.
This instrument was built in 2020 and is slightly antiqued - tastefully done and very much the norm as today applied by many makers and studios.
At this time this cello is fitted with a Belgian bridge by Aubert, a light-weight professional quality tailpiece, and a firm carbon fibre endpin, ensuring stability during performance.
This cello should be in the hands of a competent performer who could effectively explore and appreciate this cello's wide range of tonal gradations and colours, yet benefit from its projection and focus.
